Fannin County – Introduction
Fannin County Texas is named for Colonol James Fannin who commanded the group of Texans that were killed in the Goliad Massacre during the Texas Revolution. The county is located in North Eastern Texas along the Red river bordering Oklahoma in the north. Texas Highway 78 Crosses the Red River into Oklahoma just north of the county seat Bonham, Texas.
Pictures of the older County Courthouses
Fannin County is restoring their courthouse to its glorious and beautiful 1886 version. At this point it is a work in progress. We never went to Bonham during the week. I really wish we had seen the inside of the 1966 courthouse prior to restoration.

Other Fannin County Attractions
- Fannin County Centennial Marker – not the original, restored in 2015 – This area was first settled by Anglo-Americans who traveled up the Red River by steamboat in 1836. Fannin County was created in 1837, organized in 1838, and named for James W. Fannin (1805-36), who was massacred with his soldiers at Goliad (March 27, 1836), after surrendering to the Mexican Army. County officials first met at Jacob Black’s cabin on the Red River. The county seat was moved in 1840 to Warren and in 1843 to Bois d’Arc, which was renamed in 1844 in honor of James Butler Bonham (1807-36), a hero of the siege of the Alamo.
