Wood County – Introduction
Wood county Texas is named for George T Wood, who was governor of Texas from 1847 to 1849. In 1850, the county was formed as well as organized. Webster was the first actual community in the area. Quitman was specifically established as the county seat, the only seat the county has ever had.
John A Quitman is the namesake for the town of Quitman. Quitman was a prominent figure during the Mexican American war. Mr Quitman was named Governor of Mexico City. During the US occupation of Mexico City, h e is credited as the only American to ever govern from within the National Palace. He later went on to become the Governor of Mississippi.
